Not sure what the problem is exactly, but v8 now uses AAX audio plugins instead of RTAS. All the basic included plugins are new versions. Perhaps your installation is messed up and you still have the old plugins, which won't work. Just a wild guess
Can you uninstall and reinstall MC?
I'm also a little confused by your description. Are you taking about track based effect or Audio Suite? They are two different things and function differently.

Another action I did to replicate the issue: Tools>Audio Suite>choose an effect instead of "none" and click on the big pink button "Activate the current plug-in" -> results: nothing will be activated/displayed/poped-up.
Below that there is a message bar "Connected to AAE.".
