The tbc that ampex shipped with vpr2bs had a selector between direct and heterodyne. I used to push the heterodyne switch then call me engineer. He'd wander behind the racks I'd push the button and shout 'got it!'. He'd come out with an explanation I'd nod and we editors would go back to work. I told him about 10 years later what was happening - he was not as amused as we were.
In my defense I was about 18 at the time...
