Timecode has no bearing on the drift. As mentioned, sample rate does. Human error will always happen. If there is drift, there can still be a problem even is recording at 23.976 if the sample rate was set to anything but 48khz and settings are set to pullup/down. So the suggestion to not pullup/down usually works as it invokes a sample rate conversion preserving duration. The whole idea of 48048/47952 is to change speed/duration without a sample rate conversion.
