Re: [Avid-L2] "I want it to look like film" Whoops Here You Go?

It's very easy to use.

I haven't used this package, but it's inexpensive, anyway:

Rather than using the common "film damage" plugins from various packages I like to do the following:

1) Make the frames progressive, either through the use of a progressive project @ 23.98 or 24 fps, or by use of the timewarp tool.  Even if targeting an interlaced final file, create the progressive frames then add 3:2 pulldown.  Don't use frame blending.  If you have the right plugin software, I also like to add a bit of temporal blur to create the same feel as the slower shutter angle of 24fps film, on footage shot with really high field rates or shutter speeds.

2) Add some noise or film grain (less is more).

3) If you are trying to get a really "Old Time" film feel, then add film damage, in the form of jitter, gate weave and brightness variations.  A bit of vignette helps as well. I think scratch damage gets over used as well.

I know if I had a nickle for every time I've been told to, "Make it look like film" ...   Is it judder, gamut, a full film crew lighting the scene correctly etc... or most likely a combination of all of the above and much more.  In my world of reality documentary and entertainment I find deeper blacks pushing to the darker side is a primary element as perceived by most.  I'd be curious what others think and do to, "MAKE IT LOOK LIKE FILM."

Of course if your suggestion is to fully staff the shoot with an experienced Director of Photography and crew with tons of lighting gear and production savvy, well your suggestion will be tolerated but clearly discarded because, "How hard can it be?"  Resolve is free so why should I have to pay to make it look like film?

What plugins do people like to accomplish a seemingly "Filmic" look?
