John hit it the nail on the head.
I believe even the RF signal (or a drop out pulse was taken from the player and used to replicate the dropout on the recorder in dub or allow the TBC to replace with delayed signal.
Amazing to think the TBC was the size of a deck!
I have a good condition BVU950 I use for Umatic archive recovery. Great machine and I know how to service it so it should last a while.
