MC is definitely more of a memory hog and not as responsive as past systems. (Barring the Adrenaline saga that is). FCP X has a distinct advantage here being all new code. On the other hand, it isn't as deep. The consequence is that if you need that depth for your workflow, you are kind of stuck with Avid and have to hope for them to improve it rapidly.
For pure performance, Meridien was the sweet spot in my opinion.
