Re: [Avid-L2] Re: OT: Headphone Repair in Los Angeles

I like the sound of these "comfy covers". How are they different from the basic black pads?

Hi Mark. Try bringing your cans to Trew Audio on Cahuenga. I went there (when they were still called Coffey sound) to get replacement pads for the MDR-7506's. Mine had the same black flaking disintegration problem as yours. They did have replacement OEM earpads for the 7506, but they sold me some nice comfy covers instead, which work great.

I could not agree more, Mark. Sometimes there's a particular make and model that comes along and just gets it right, and even subsequent "advances" can actually feel like retreats. I have a set of Proton speakers that are also nearly 20 years old, and they still sound better than the current generation of Genelecs and JBLs I use every day. I don't pretend to know why, but they just do. Maybe the humidity was exactly right when they were put together and boxed up! Who the hell knows?

Best of luck!

David,

I'll check Amazon to see if they stock the pads for my Sony's - it's the mdr-cd770.  I've gotta say, I know they're almost 20 years old, but I've listened to all different kinds of headphones, and nothing has come close to these in fidelity (IMHO).  I'd even consider finding a new pair if I could if I can't find parts.

Bigfish,

I actually live near Speaker City and had thought of going there this weekend so thanks for the suggestion.  I've been in and around Burbank for 15 years and strangely have never stepped foot in Speaker City - I know that's not right, but at least now I've got a reason.

Thanks
Mark

Give Speaker City in Burbank a call.  They are mostly speakers and repair of speakers but they have a lot of experience so I'd bet they might have a suggestion.  Not quite Hollywood but if you squint you can pretend.  In the past I've found foam replacements for my sony headphones that are smaller non muff design.  It might have been at Fry's or maybe Radio Shack I stumbled on them.
