Try explaining that to a production company with 20 to 30 seats of mc 5.5.x and earlier that all came bundled with BCC. Now I have to tell them to at least get a support contract so as not to be stranded at their current version, but with the caveat that we shouldn't really upgrade unless they want to pay for BCC8 and above for 64 bit compatibility which is no small chunk of change. Oh and by the way when you upgrade your San may not work with the required OS on mac so you either have to run an unqualified San, even Unitys sometime fall in this category, and risk problems. The list goes on. For know I stress to all my clients not to get stranded and get a support contract for 299.00/year. But if after that Avid drops the ball on patches for 5.5.X that will surely leave a bad taste in the clients mouth.
My take is you can't milk old technology forever but if it ain't broke.... Now bean counters don't see things like I do and since they don't operate the equipment they could care less about the operators inconvenience and lack of functionality. And then there's the new mac pro won't drive an existing Nitris so well there goes my bob if I upgrade. I'd rather go back to the "High Colonic" fad of the 70's than try and get money from the bean counters. Sure both are a pain in the Arse but at least with the Colonic I can feel clean. I don't feel clean after dealing with bean counters, perhaps that's just me. ;-)
