I never used a Mac Pro for Avid. I had PCs at the office, and when buying for the house, went to an iMac. Of course, we are all tapeless, so I just didn't feel I needed the expansion space. Thunderbolt was fast enough for drives, and anything else I wanted to do. I didn't need nearly as much real estate, and it was clean.
In two years, I've not found the desire for any expansion other than wishing I had more Thunderbolt ports, and buying the Belkin device to get some USB3 ports.
Practically everything I get these days is either coming in on USB drives, Thunderbolt drives, or e-SATA for which I have a reader connected via Thunderbolt.
About the only thing I'd consider an expansion bay for, would be to put some GPU cards out there to help when I am working in Resolve. But so far, it's not been an issue.

Its interesting people are going to iMacs for Avid work. I like that choice. Anyone using an expansion bay with an iMac?
