Hmm -- looks like the answer is here in the release notes for v.3.21 of the SONY AMA Plugin:
XAVC
XAVC QFHD and 4K cannot be played back in real-time with the Video Quality Menu option set
to Full Quality.
PDZK-MA2 v3.21 Release Notes
No reference to system specs, just says it flat out won't do it. Still, I'm curious if anyone is seeing better results...
Also, here's another potentially frightening point in the SONY release notes:
Can anyone translate that from SONY into English?
The source timecode will not be present on XAVC 4K clips when performing an AMA Link to the
4K folder and then an AMA Link to the same individual MXF files inside the 4K image that an
AMA Link to folder was performed with.

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that Avid doesn't use the GPU for much on the Mac, rather that AMA playback taxes multiple cpu cores.

I"m no expert in these matters, but this graphics card looks WAY under
spec to me for trying to decompress and display 4k on the fly. Not to
mention 4K from one of the most demanding forms of compression in use.
I'm sure other more knowledgeable folk will chime in, but that's what
stuck out to me at first glance.
