I've attached an AvidFX (Boris Red) project file that uses the BCC PixelChooser filter to use a grayscale matte to key between a foreground and a background. It's currently set up so that if you change the "PC Layer" track in the timeline from the linear gradient I left it as to your grayscale matte it will key between V1 and V2 using that matte. You could reverse the key if necessary by just reversing which track is V1 and which is V2...
