How?
Sure, you can patch from your BOB straight into your monitors. How would you determine the monitoring volume? You would need to keep it the same all the time. Which will kill you when you are listening to a piece of night atmo one minute, and to an imported music track the next. You generally will not want to change the clip levels or master fader just to change the monitoring. It's not meant for that.
But this is true whether you monitor in stereo or in 5.1.
Unless your active monitors come with such a controller, you will want monitor level control.
