Re: [Avid-L2] MC7 H264

Yeah I don't really like the visual quality either, but we're used to working in 8:1 or 35:1 in the reality world so visual quality isn't of too much concern.  DNxHD takes up waaaay to much space on the Isis (which we're paying for by the terabyte) and by using the interplay H264 codec we'd be cutting our offline media costs by a huge margin.  We'd be using roughly 2% of the space compared to DNxHD 36 and 17% compared to 8:1.  It sounds awesome to me, but I don't want to start using it, and then have problems with bogged down systems once we start building shows.  If it doesn't work with MC 5.5 though then I guess there's no point in pursuing this.

Ah, yes, I see. We took a look at that as we are planning to implement Interplay and proxy workflow next year. Visual quality is pretty poor, though and I'd use something else if media is on local drives.

I believe the implementation of H264 Avid is using for proxy footage is all i-frame, so it's not as burdensome on the processor as you are used to.  It's a feature carried over from Interplay.  That being said, I still would not use it for the purpose you are intending, especially because you want to use it with systems running older software, that predate its existence.

I'd go with DNX36, as Roger suggested.

You are not proposing to convert other footage TOO H264, I hope? Mostly, H264 is a processor hog and I think you'll be in for a lot of pain. The students where I teach often shoot on DSLRs and AMA the clips and get bogged down on the i5 iMacs with too little RAM that they have to use (we are about to upgrade). For optimised playback and small files, try DNxHD36.

Just started on a new show that's been upgraded to MC7.  I have it running on my home computer, but have never used it on a production.  At home I use the newish h264 codec for offline because of the space that it saves, but I'm wondering if this is a viable option for an hour long timeline using multigroups with up to 5 cameras.  I know that h264 is a more CPU intensive codec so I'm wondering if this is going to cause slow timelines or other various problems when we start editing versus using 8:1 or 35:1 SD.  We need to save space because this facility charges per terabyte on their Isis.

Also, if we were to use the h264 codec, would it be compatible with the latest version of MC 5.5?

Thanks
