[Avid-L2] todays edit room

This is a bit off the essential topics but it came to mind to me while wandering around NAB this year. I am a single owner operator, no shared storage, no multi room networking. As I was wandering around NAB seeing all the new converters, storage options and expansion boxes, I started to wonder….if I was to build from scratch now….?

Everyday I come in, turn on my racks (three sony decks that have not been used in 4 years, my patch bay (not pulled a cable in 3 years) and all the drives and of course the Mac Pro and Mojo DX.
In the suite I have the two cinema displays, a Flanders HD monitor, a Sony 14 M4U and a Samsung 42" LCD for clients. All the monitors seem to still make sense, but that huge Mackie 1604 vlz is basically my speaker volume control. I don't think I'd remember how to do a scratch track if I had too but that does happen now and again so the ability to record scratch is probably good. But the endless sources don't ever go through there as all media no comes to me on drives or cards. Would be great to view the work on all monitors if editing, using AE, Premier or FCP or what ever app I am using at the time (which rules out Avid hardware right?)

So if you were going to build a simple one man Avid Symphony ( or Premiere for that matter) bay for corporate and occasional TV projects, Mac based….what would be the essential "must have" hardware within a modest budget of course? Darth mac, expansion chassis, AJA IO, what about audio monitoring, BM ultrascopes?

It would be nice to no longer hear the hum of the rack and decks and to lose the Mackie so I can eat my lunch at my console. What does the single suite of today look like?

I'm sure I left a million "what if's" out but what the heck. May be a fun thread for the long hot summer.
