That's been my experience also Mark. But I try to avoid staying in AMA land as much as possible.

If you are listening Avid, not everyone feels this way. Solid linking is critical for my workflows.  Importing will not cut it.  I've been linking for the last five years in FCP.  Importing everything would be a wildly impractical backward step.

And I remain optimistic, though progress is much slower than I had hoped.  Linking has improved even from 7.0.2 to 7.0.4.

I'm joining this choir. Hope the good people of Avid (Marianne, David, et. al) are listening. Here's my story:

On the original promise of AMA, I migrated my feature from the logging stage in FCP7 to MC6.5, and am now finishing the edit MC7.0.3.  Linking was extreme issue earlier this week when a power failure knocked my RAID off-line for a moment while editing. On restart, my ProRes media was fine on the RAID, and the project came up fine. But over 3000 AMA-linked ProRes files were off-line. The match-frame/find bin trick worked less than 50% of the time.

I had a full back-up from 2 days prior, but because we are marching to submit to 17 film festivals worldwide tomorrow, there were critical cuts in the past two days, and I had to retrieve them. Finally, the solution was to retrieve the sequence saved to the attick 5 min. before the crash, start our Avid project on the backup drive, where it saw all media on-line, then open the retrieved attic bin, copy the sequence to a new bin, close the 2-day old sequence, and launch the retrieved one. At 2:30AM, it was great to see the most current sequence with all it's media linked. Thank god.

Anyway. I would love for Avid to understand that I simply want to get the beautiful movie I see in my edit via AMA, OUTPUT to a same-as-source .mov file that equals the quality of my ProRes source. That has been a hair-pulling challenge, but the sub-master filer and video/audio mixdowns has been working.

If 7.0.4 is markedly better for AMA linking, please let me know. Right-now I'm staying with 7.0.3 because everything is working well-enough. At least I know what software sledgehammers to use!

Best,
-Roberto
