Other times going into effects mode and rendering the particular effect using the render button on the effects window might get it to register the render. Also stepping in and rendering nested effects helps sometime. Other times I've been forced to do video mixdowns for problem sections.

This is a recurring bug that goes way back. And yes, closing the bin and reopening is the key.
