[Avid-L2] AAFs, file sources (tapeless) QuickTime Movies and MXF media files support timecode metadata past hour 23

 - source files that have non-standard start timecode metadata.

I just wanted to start some dialog that this is even possible to have timecode metadata that is past hour 23 with tapeless file based sources.

- thoughts

Resolve / Avid - tapeless / file based online conform roundtrips --- for fun here is another gotcha about possible non-standard timecode metadata and how the Avid and Resolve display it and how one might want to rectify it before passing an AAF and MXF files to a Resolve from an Avid (non-standard meaning does not follow the standard of a tape deck which uses hour 00 to hour 23).

AAFs, file sources (tapeless) QuickTime Movies and MXF media files support timecode metadata past hour 23.

- In Resolve, in the Edit Page, in the Edit Index, if there is an event start timecode with lets say hour 27 in the timeline, then this is an example of what I am talking about that I would want to avoid.

In the Avid if a source clip has hour 27 start timecode, the Avid will just re-start-counting at hour 00, so this master clip would appear as hour 03 in the Avid, YET THE TIMECODE IS REALLY STILL HOUR 27. Resolve does this too, except in Resolve the user can right-click a clip in the "media pool" and change the clip properties to hour 27. When I come across a source file with hour 27, I would want to give it standard timecode metadata for complete transparency. In the Avid, this would mean if it was an MXF file with hour 27, I do some media management before passing MXFs and an AAF to the Resolve.

Since I love to track metadata as much as possible for future-proofing flagging purposes I would do these steps for a mxf media file that had start timecode metadata of hour 27.

1) in an Avid Bin make a new column called "start_org"

2) duplicate the original start timecode into the new custom column called "start_org"

3) in the custom column called "start_org" type in the actual timecode for this example it would be hour 27

4) In the clips Start Timecode increment the hour timecode 1 hour

5) consolidate the master clip and activating delete original.

6) In the clips Start Timecode decrement the hour timecode 1 hour making the clip at least now conform to known standards of tape decks. (I love attempting to make tapeless workflows work for tape all at the same time)

7) consolidate the master clip and activating delete original.

- a total conform can now happen.

One of the differences between Avid and Resolve would be that in the Avid if the user modifies start timecode of a master clip, the start timecode of the master clip in the sequence gets updated. In Resolve if the user modifies the start timecode of a clip it seems the clip becomes unlinked to the Resolve timeline.

to note - QuickTime Pro can display timecodes past hour 23.

For fun I got Resolve to display hour 100 timecode metadata just to see if it could.
