The legacy problem had to do with the record window being an "overlay" and something changes in the display structure when in pause. There were suggestions as to how to tweak the pause or maybe the play levels to better match. Do a search on levels and pause or some combo and it should come up. Reminds me of the still frame chroma adjustment on a Viper 2 IIRC.
