Back at my own system. It would seem that the first time I hit Opt+Effects Mode button after launching MC it will give me a single screen. Subsequent attempts to repeat this though give me a two-screen Composer window with the ability to drag it out (actually, I have to drag it in -smaller- first and then out) to a large(ish) single screen.
I've managed somehow after lots of fiddling and adding the Opt modifier to my keyboard shortcut for Effects Editing Workspace to get it to yield fullscreen every time. At least until I quit and restart the app. Haven't checked that yet.
Not absolutely certain what path got me to a successful setup, but the Opt key definitely played a role.
