Re: [Avid-L2] Re: My take on NAB

What makes you think we cannot upgrade the code to handle 4K?  We've moved to 64 bit and have been working on the player engine for a bit now. There has been a lot of work done to move key architectural components into the MediaCentral platform we announced at NAB.  This means that items like the player engine and AMA are common components that allows for all Avid products (and 3rd parties once we release the connectivity toolkit) to take advantage seamlessly.  4K would work the same way.  Pro Tools, which took on the player engine in PT 11, will get 4K when it's implemented for Media Composer.  For a proof point, see the Media Director product released at NAB.  Media Director uses AMA in the MediaCentral platform in an Interplay environment.  The FX architecture can be upgraded to 4K too.

"But, would all these high-end companies buy Avid storage and DAM solutions without the editing software to play nice with it? That's what makes me think we'll see improvements in MC as we move along. But what do I know?"

Roger asked the question I've most been pondering. With, I assume, code almost impossible to upgrade to 4K (without introducing years of bug fixing) and FX engine that, again I assume, will not be easy to upgrade to fully using dual GPUs, it seems an almost impossible task for Avid to do all it MUST do this by -- let's say IBC. Note that they do seem to be able to add components like AMA, but what needs to be done now is very different.

When I read Avid's announcements I thought it was an "Open Sony" redux when they gave-up on their own NLEs and said they would work with anyone to build what the customer wanted. I assumed Avid would leave MC as an SD/HD NLE and let Resolve, FCP X, and the entire Adobe suite carry the Avid corporate solution into 4K and 8K. This would be step 2 for, perhaps, IBC or the next NAB.
