Re: [Avid-L2] My take on NAB

Inflammatory? From me? You obviously don't know me! :) If I meant to be inflammatory you'd know it. :)  Believe it or not I rewrote it to be more supportive.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, but I do have one small question about the math: $9.99 a month does not equal $90 a year unless there's a secondary "year" option. The math would suggest $119.88 per year on that monthly.

This statement is inflammatory Phillip.

Yes, we did redo the Education program.  The price is now $295 per year (includes a year of updates and technical support), each year thereafter it's $99.  You get software updates for that $99 and technical support.   The previous program was free updates for 4 years after the $295 purchase and no technical support was included- that was a $99 add on per year.  However, we were seeing a bunch of students that were not dropping off of the system after graduation so we needed a better way of validation.  We moved to this same program for Pro Tools a year ago and it's been working fine.  We also streamlined the institution and teacher price so that it's now the same as the student price.  The more important move for students is that we introduced a $9.99/Month program.  That's $90 per year and we feel this is a very competitively priced product for students.  Additionally, we have a floating license at EDU pricing for large institutions.  This will allow Media Composer to be purchased and implemented at large schools in a much easier way.  Overall this program has tested very favorably for students and institutions and we are confident we have a very strong education program.  Look for Avid to be even more aggressive in our EDU programs in the coming months.  It's something Louis and the executive staff are very passionate about.

So now they are charging students more than they used to?  Wow, they really want that edu market. ;(

Yep, up against a very powerful (and free) app from Blackmagic Design, increasing the cost to students (or reducing the overall value) is a really smart move. Not.

While we all know there are smart and intelligent people who are passionate about their products, it's hard to understand why decisions like this are made.
