I'm finding that high bitrate h264 is a good intermediate in a pinch, 10-20Mbps or higher. Almost everything handles h264 well, at least for quality. It's become a great universal solvent.

Thanks all (Tod, long time no see). This job came to me too last minute to do advance research - I'm currently in day two of two. We had to simply run with the game maker converting the Fraps to h.264. I AMAed and transcoded. I'm not seeing any severe loss so we're OK. I do like to do these things correctly when possible though.
Lot of useful answers here. Hopefully someone will get the chance to make use of them.Martin
