Re: [Avid-L2] Examining Video Essence level with ama link to file?

One of our industry's lousy not-so-secrets: MOST people that use editing applications (audio and video) do not know what these things are, why they're used, or why they should care:

color bar patterns
reference tone
2-pop
slates
countdown/clocks
how 23.98 TC does not reflect actual clock time
proper pulldown
fields / field order
video levels
audio levels

Feel free to add to the list based on your experience. Lots of facilities out there only teach people to do a task, and never *why* they should do it a certain way. It's up to us to try (if we can) to wring this behavior out of "professional" environments.

Good luck everybody!

Well today I had to do some fixes to the show that I had inherited the problem file from.  After doing my usual export I still found the bars to be low.  I then looked at the actual sequence and it turns out the color bars had been imported into Avid set to RGB so they were washed out and low in level right in the timeline.  This explains why the program content looked correct but the bars were off.  So F me skipping how someone doesn't notice the color bars are that far off when outputting to tape as well as file is beyond me.
