[Avid-L2] Re: Videoguys' Guide (with Video) to Avid Media Composer | Software

Added perspective from a lurker.

Couldn't agree more with you Gary on the education pricing.  At USC, where I run the editing track, we found a huge jump in the number of students who bought Avid when they changed their policy to sell MC at $295 with four years of free upgrades.  Nearly every editing student I teach walks out with a copy of MC.  And they are committed to it.

As far as I can tell, some of them may switch to the subscription model, but the $99/year maintenance fee for upgrades in the perpetual and subscription models is going to put a dent in that.  Students are THAT price sensitive.

We've been pounding on Avid for years for the floating license, and I'm happy to see that.  We'll continue to teach Avid (it is a big reason why our alums are so employable), and the students will continue to have it on the workstations that we image.  But I expect to see a roll-off in the number of students who buy it for themselves.
