[Avid-L2] Re: My take on NAB

"... read their latest white paper on future media workflows. It is enlightening as to their
current and future stance, and has for some reason gotten little to no traction in these parts."

Perhaps the reason for the lack of traction is not that folks haven't read the white paper, but that white papers are what companies publish when they can't make specific product announcements. Companies who have an actual engineering schedule for the next version of a product, announce -- and if at all possible -- demo the product at NAB. They will, if they have to, build a balsa model or have someone demo an alpha version of software. Even if the product will not ship until IBC -- they will not fail to present at least the feature list of what will be in the "coming soon" product. I don't remember anyone posting such a concrete list. Maybe I missed it amoungst all the pricing announcements -- which was this year's "distraction." The ACA, pricing schemes, etc. seems -- as an ex-marketing type -- to have been crafted months ago to to buy time and provide something to show analysts to keep the sock from tanking.

So logic -- plus 2 decades of Avid at NAB -- tell me that the FULL EXTENT of what folks want -- fixes and features -- isn't coming any time soon. (And, don't use the "we don't want the competition to know ahead of time" response -- do you think Apple or Adobe base their planning on what Avid will release in 3-6 months?) The last time I remember when their were no specific product announcements -- maybe 10 years ago -- Avid tried to cover the gap with a series of speeches from marketing folks from other companies who all claimed to have joined in a "partnership" with Avid. I think they even brought Bill back.

I've reviewing a Sony 4K camera. The only two NLE's that require a 4K intermediate codec are MC and the old iMovie.  The only two NLE's that can't export a 4K movie are MC and the new iMovie. (The new iMove, however, plays XAVC very smoothly.)
