Create a new admin user account. If it's working faster/better, you can migrate your files to the new user account

Just saw the other messages, so see you already had the DiskWarrior recommendation. You'll need to boot from the disk to Rebuild the directories - although you can repair permissions from the installed copy - but it's the Rebuild that will help straighten out the other issues, too. Also, free space is important. And if you have anything that will check the status of the hardware - the LB in particular - I would run it. Slower boot times are known to precede a Logic Board failure, and once that goes you'll just need a new one, or a hardware repair.
