Chicken and egg. Not enough users because Avid didn't listen to the existing users and act on their recommendations (sound familiar?).
So potential new users saw an expensive tool that was missing important features and receiving no serious development for years...
The result was inevitable.
I fear the same future for MC for much the same reasons.
