Heat is a cause of lockups. Check your fans and check if anyone installed any additional cards or drives that would increase heat.

I'm going to try restoring the OS over the weekend - maybe even updating to 10.9.1
Fortunately we have additional bays to share the workload, and this particular machine was mostly used as an AE station.
