[Avid-L2] number of cores vs CPU speed (imac vs Mac Pro)

I wonder if there is consensus about the performance benefits on Macs of
number of cores versus higher CPU clock speed?

In my limited understanding, multiple cores are tapped when playing AMA
footage, transcoding & rendering, whereas importing/exporting quicktimes
only uses a single cpu, so higher clock speed is more significant for
that. Is there something else where the advantage goes to CPU clock speed?

Which would be more important for playing back multiple streams of
DNxHD36 with stacked effects? Or is that more dependent on GPU and drives?

I have a couple projects coming up that will involve transcoding HD or
4K sources to DNxHD36, editing splitscreens of 3-7 images, with effects,
and am wondering if the latest 27" iMac would be adequate to the task,
or whether a 12-core Mac Pro would offer significant advantages.

Also, I don't think the pre-trashcan Mac Pros with 12 cores were ever
qualified by Avid, but I imagine people have been using them. Any issues?

Thanks,
--Michael
