Thank you all for the great replies!
Yeah, it definitely seems I need a custom LUT, and resolve seems like a great way to do that. For the purposes of the archive, I found this: http://makingitcompatible.blogspot.com/2013/07/creating-custom-lut-in-davinci-resolve.html
Then I can use Steve's great instructions to apply it to my footage.
The only last hitch is deciding to transcode or not. Michael, do you use ProRes when you transcode from resolve? I've only used standard resolutions with ProRes and DNxHD, so I didn't realize ProRes supported 1920x1440. Does it also support the 2.7k and 4k resolutions the GoPro shoots? For projects with a longer-term edit, that may be a great solution to get more efficient playback.
Follow up question - are there any resources that can tell me whether a bigger CPU or GPU will make playback of the h.264 footage more smooth when using AMA? My 5D files playback fine, but the GoPro ones are painful, and if I can avoid transcoding by simply throwing bigger iron at the problem, I may go that route.
Thanks again,
Vince
