Re: [Avid-L2] PDW-U1 ama workflow?

A couple points that are probably obvious, but, since you brought it up:

-yes, very similar to the EX workflow.

- The u1 will show up as a drive even without the drivers.  But the contents of the disc will be inaccessible or it will appear empty.   You can tell if the driver is installed when the XDcam disc icon shows up on your desktop when the disc is in.
- The U1 is usb2, so it's kinda slow.
- xdcam codecs are avid 'native,' so one option is to copy the entire folder structure to your media drive then AMA to that and away you go-- or, AMA directly to the disc, then consolidate to the media drive- that's about the same speed and your media is then in the media files folder.  That said, though, XDcam codecs are taxing on the CPU- depending in the power of your computer, playback can be a little 'clunky,' especially jogging or dragging through media.  Generally, it's not worth the time and storage space to transcode, but don't be surprised if ryour system feels sluggish  with XDcam codecs.

Tomorrow I have to set up a U1 drive for some XDCam material.  We've been emailed the Sony drivers and our systems are mac based.  Is the workflow a typical ama link to volume kind of thing?  I'm thinking it would be similar to the card based EX workflows I've worked with a little bit.  Not sure what system OS we'll be on either 10.6.8 on V. 5.5x or 10.8.3/10.8.4 with V 6.5.4.  Any gotchas to watch out for?  Not sure if this is 23.98 or 29.97 material.  More will be revealed.
