Yes, it's possible, works pretty well, and I just got a current-model MBP a few weeks ago (black friday) and it came with 10.8.3 - not 10.9, so don't be so sure about the 10.9.
Also I read somewhere -or-other- that there's an update release immanent that will run on 10.9. (?)
Other options include a second-hand last generation tower. No thunderbolt, but slots and that allows for a USB-3/Esata combo card, or an extra GPU, or an ATTO card - none of which you can can do with iMac. Of course, you gotta buy a monitor or two, and avid doesn't need an extra GPU, so it depends on your use, I guess...
