I've been happily using exFAT flash storage for several years.  I suggest:

1) Get a USB 3.0 device if you use large files.

2) Get a device with a hardware write-protect switch.  This often eliminates the need to "safely eject" the drive.

Unfortunately, Avid on PC often doesn't want to let go and let Windows safely eject a thumb drive without quitting Avid.  If an editor gets impatient and pulls out the drive, you can lose everything on it pretty easily with ExFAT.  Not that you should ever do that with HFS+ or NTFS either, but at least you have a fighting chance of not corrupting your data.
