Re: [Avid-L2] Centralized Storage

Greg pretty much covered it!

We are a mixture of PC and MAC over at my facility and everything works flawlessly.
We have it configured into 6 partitions that show up as 6 drives on our desktop. We hold 5-10 shows and projects on each drive.

It's a win7-based server, but we're all mac, and it works flawlessly. You can connect fiber or ethernet - or a combination of both. No charge per seat for 'clients,' but you need to spend money to connect to those clients. Fibre cards, switches, etc. With ethernet I assume the costs are lower, but we only have on system connected by ethernet so we don't have special switches or anything - it just uses the server's native port. More systems, you need to connect

We run our boxes in Raid 5 - 'dynaraid,' and you can also do 'mirroring,' but you get half the published storage if you do that. Both my boxes are way past the end of warranty, and as the individual spindles fail, and they will, I swap in a new one, and it rebuilds. In nearly 10 years - I think we bought our first one around 2004? - the only data that was ever lost was a project file - two drives failed simultaneously. THAT WON'T HAPPEN TO YOU for the first 4 to 5 years of your system's life - if EVER. And even though 2 drives failing simultaneously is a recipe for disaster in any raid 5 system, the fine support staff at Facilis managed to save everything. (In retrospect, I probably shouldn't keep our attic folders on the server - but I've literally never lost anything as even the attic wasn't corrupted - just the current project folder, so we got back to work quickly.)

Limit the number of people that are allowed to make partitions, etc., but that's just organizational. It's not difficult to manage. I've done my own system upgrades, etc., when new releases come out, but I generally just call them and double-check my work or confirm my plans. Because one of my systems is very old, I'm pretty regularly getting drive failures how - plus we have weird vibrations from heavy traffic in front of our building - and I can STILL strongly recommend the Terrablock. I'm in 'worst case' scenario
