I've been asked to do this before myself. Honestly, I don't think it's exploitation because it's from a script they've already had cut. They just want a comparison with what they have already seen. They should pay, but I can see that they probably figure that if you're really interested in the job and really qualified, then you'll do it. How many pages do they want to see cut? I don't know if I'd do more than three for free or a day's work maybe. I don't know if I'd spend multiple days unless the pay-off was going to be pretty darn good.

I've met with a TV development company that is seeking an in house Avid guy. The type of work they do is prominent on my resume and my reel.
As part of the placement process, they have tasked me with cutting a sample script from a previous edit they produced.
