Agreed.
If nothing else, it sure is nice to have a free application to view MXF files, which is both undependable and a pain to setup with VLC.
Also, VLC does not allow for frame-by-frame stepping through media, which is important for notes and remote collaboration.

Obviously a bit deep for an unsophisticated client, but not bad for many director/shooter/editors that many of us deal with. A client of mine just used it to play .flv Flash files. It seems like Assimilate has greater plans for this than a mere player.
