I really fail to see the point why not to use VLC always...
you can add a logo (video effects / overlay), so if you make your safe area / whatever image in Photoshop, save it as PNG it will work just fine.
You just insert it once, and it will stick.
Next is Timecode. I'll volunteer to write some shareware to read TC on clips (QT, MXF, whatever) and save it as a subtitle file next to the source clips.
(Meaning, VLC will auto-pick it and you have BITC.)
