Hi john,
It would probably too long to go into detail but essentially the VFX editor is the link between the editor (and later on the colourist/DI suite) and the film's VFX department and vendors, so it involves tracking the process from shot footage, to scanned or digitally converted plate, to VFX shot going into the final film. On a typical film where there might be 1000+ VFX shots, it can be a bit of a headache keeping tabs on everything and dealing with any glitches or problems that might occur at each step of the process. On the more fun side of things, it's also often my job to create temp effects in Avid both to illustrate what we're asking of the VFX vendor and to act as a placeholders for screenings etc.
Working with the VFX Producer can involve selecting plates or other materials such as motion capture takes, working on temp effects, reviewing WIP shots and generally keeping them up to date with changes to the cut. LIkewise, I will inform the editor of any VFX issues or requests that they need to be made aware of.
re the VFX for Gravity, about 97% of it was done by Framestore in London.

Steve,
For those of us not in the feature film world and workflows could you explain what the duties are for the visual effects editor and how you work with the visual effects supervisor and other members of the creative team? I would imagine a film of this scale had several vendors supplying special effects.
