I don't see why this wouldn't work. You only need the shots used in the existing sequences so put them all in a bin and try what I suggested. As long as the sequences haven't been decomposed or consolidated the referenced clips will be the original full length clips that were in the bin. You are correct that it won't show you any clips that aren't in the sequence but for online you won't need them and if you're trying to get ahead of the game do the ones they've used for now and then when things are locked see what comes up missing and do the same. I really think you should give this a try.
