Hmm knowing those guys pretty well it was more a recognition that lots of people wanted to use it but couldn't afford it.
Free davinci was a way to get people into the product in much the way protools free or avid dv free worked well to build market share. Yes it helps convince people to go decklink rather than kona but they were already the dominant card so its not like it was pimping a failing product.
As for control surfaces they support a few third party ones so yes I'm sure they'd rather you bought their surface but you're not really locked in.
It's really about market share and dominance. Dropping the cost of color correction so dramatically made them few friends in the industry and they took a lot of flak from other manufacturers but the real winners have been the current generation of film makers. From cheap I/o to now cheap 4k cameras its never been easier to get into making films.
30 years ago starting out in tv in Manchester the only choices were tv stations (exactly two of them) or umatic corporate video companies. Kids today can borrow 10 grand and be in business. That wouldn't have got you an ADO joystick.
We all love to complain but today is the best of times in film and tv and we will see the benefits in a decade when access to the full set of tools is just expected just as the end of the 70s exploded with lightweight film cameras and just as betacam made video accessable.
Piracy is driven in large part by accessability - like it or loathe it adobes creative cloud has killed piracy in my neck of the woods. I used to literally have to fly to Singapore to find a legit copy of cs5. And that box was heavy. Now 50 bucks gets you everything. Nearly everyone I know has a CC license at 50 a month it's too simple a decision even for casual users. The interface for delivery is excellent and updates are regular. I think it's the future for everyone to be honest.
