Drones in cinematography as well as the pertaining safety issues have been discussed in great detail (too much detail actually) on CML-chat.  I won't repeat any of it here. Search through the archives to learn more.

I'll just say that those of us who have been in model aviation for some time (in my case thirty to forty years, depending on when you start counting) are horrified at how these things are being used.  No experienced RC pilot would ever consider some of the things I've seen people do unless they have a serious screw loose in their heads.

Why?  Because experienced modelers have seen it all.  We know just how easy it is to crash and have accidents.  These things are toys.  Repeat: toys.  They are NOT professional tools.  The cost of the rig is irrelevant.  I've crashed $15,000 planes and $6,000 helicopters.  Toys.  Expensive, but toys.  They are not designed for professional mission-critical use.

A lot of the people using them to shoot photos or video simply don't have enough experience and knowledge to fully understand what they are doing and the risks they are entering into (or causing).

At some level it really angers me because these idiots are going to cause the FAA to clamp down on model aviation.  All we need is one or two good accidents and things will change.  In the end those who have dedicated decades to learning and have done so responsibly, within the law and in the confines of approved flying sites (clubs, mostly) will suffer the consequences of the reckless application of these machines.
