So, when you are in the Effects workspace, is the Effect Editor visible? If not, you can't select a segment by clicking at all in MC or Symph - always been that way. NewsCutter behaves differently. Try selecting the workspace, opening hte Effect editor and promptly saving the Workspace. I'm on Mac OS 10.8.4 with MC7 and it behaves as I expect.
