Same thing happened to friends of mine years ago with the gear in a rental car. In their case they stole the rental car. Fortunately the rental had lojac and they got things back quickly. Another producer had a rental car with all the field tapes, remember back when there was a truly functional record medium, of 3 travel specials and the car was stolen. Talk about puckered sphincter. That one also ended well because the theifs didn't know what to do with the tapes and after the joy ride was over police found the car with the tapes still in the trunk. Sorry for your loss.
