[Avid-L2] Re: Avid media archiving solution

I dream of having a Terrablock or Edit Share system! We have 7 systems hooked up to Studio Networks EVO v4 administered through their SANmp software. They don't have anything like virtual volumes. It's just 14 different volumes that are set. (All purchased and installed before any editors were hired, of course.)

I'm guessing we're going to have to go with the multiple numbered folders within each MXF folder for the different projects.

They're all 'multi-write,' so everyone can work on any project, either sequentially or simultaneously, then once the project wraps, we archive the entire virtual volume to spinning media- two copies. Generally new editors or assistants need to be disciplined a little before they remember to render and import to the Terrablock volume instead of locally - but that's true of any workflow. This workflow also works for FCP projects.

We found that recovering one small bit off LTO was too time consuming, and 9 times out if 10, we're only looking for a graphic, a final edited/rendered piece, a single piece of b-roll, etc. With Avid, you can simple move the MediaFiles folder to the root, and you can actually edit (a little) off the archive drive if you just need something quick. For most things we restore the archive to the terrablock.

We don't charge our clients for archive, except on rare occasion - but we DO charge them for restore FROM archive!
