Paul Sampson's guide is excellent. About 80% of the media I get was
recorded as XDCam 50 on Sony Prodisks. Here are a few observations.
The disks have been nearly bullet proof. Out of many hundreds of disks
I've only had 2 fail. I was able to recover 100% of one of them using
Sony's utility. Sony's media recovery center was able to recover 100%
of the other for a small fee. The disks are inexpensive enough that
none of the producers I work with feel the need to reuse them.
For the majority of editing in MC I suggest using a Sony U1 or U2 drive
and using AMA to link to the disk. The sad part of this is that with a
full 50 GB disk the AMA linking can take a good 10 minutes. Once the
clips are on line, cut them into a selects sequence and consolidate or
transcode the sequence. Repeat for all your disks.
