The common, crossplatform, format that eliminates the 4GB limitation you've mentioned is ExFAT. Read/write on both Mac and PC at the OS level.
Pretty widespread today...

The issue with large files on thumb drives is the Fat32 formatting and cross-platform compatibility with partitions larger than 4GB.
