I was just thinking about how if one uses the classic Avid File>Import command, the Avid gives all of these "sources" a suffix. Here is how one could do an online conform in Resolve 9 with this type of situation. The DaVinci Resolve 9 can pull the original sources with the entire name plus the suffix of the file as the Avid named these source files by default using the classic Avid File>Import command.
---> note --> in a 23.976 1080p project, if one AMA's shots, the Avid will only add a suffix to the "source" icon if you converted the AMA file with the Avid Convert command ---> The Avid Convert command is done by going to the "Clip menu >Transcode" command and if the Avid converts the frame rate, the avid will add a suffix to the Avid "source" too!!!
In the Avid if you are viewing the bin in "text View", go to bin menu and choose "set bin display..."
The "Set Bin Display" Dialog box appears.
1) put a checkmark next to "Sources" in this "Set Bin Display" dialog box.
2) click the "ok" button in the "Set Bin Display" Dialog Box
You just revealed in the Avid bin the actual "source" icon that the Avid has associated with these clips. The Avid also uses this "Source" Icon to create AAF's and EDL's. The Resolve can use this "Source" icon name to pull the selects in what Resolve calls the "Media Pool" and link them to the Resolve's "Timeline" (the Resolve can be configured to view this "source" as a "Reel No")
--> to repeat --> When you export an Avid AAF, the Avid uses the name of this "source" icon as the name one can use to pull selects in the Resolve.
This Avid "source" icon looks like a paper icon with the upper right corner folded down. There is a circle in the foreground and a rectangle in the background on this paper "source" document icon. To the right of this "Source" icon, if you have the "Name" column up, will show you the actual name of this "source" icon associated with the imports that were done using the Avid "file" menu and choosing "import" from the menu.
If you are viewing your bin in "text View" you can go to the "Bin" menu and choose "Choose Columns..." from the menu.
The "Bin Column Selection" window appears. You can also select the heading "Source File".
This "Source File" column can also show you this lovely information about your imports too.
Again to note --> ---> the Avid actually uses the name of this "Source" icon when creating AAF's and EDL's. If you change the name of this "Source" Icon then in the AAF's and EDL's exported you will see that "Source" icon name in the EDL and AAF.
The files imported by using the classic Avid "file" menu "import" command seem to always have the suffix appended at the end. This is the Avid's naming convention for this type of imported clip.
You will see the name of the file with the suffix appended as the "Source" icon name.
again, to repeat... this "Source" icon name is the name found in "Set Bin Display...>Sources" and by default the original name is listed in the "Source File" column in your Avid Bin.
so again to repeat... this type of file>import in the Avid adds a suffix to the file name of all the "source" icons.
You can see this if you look at your "source" icon "name" column.
Resolve 9 can be set up to pull these "sources" using the exact name including the suffix of the file. Thus, the Resolve 9 Timeline will link up to the Resolve 9 "Media Pool" using this Avid "Source" as the Resolve's "Reel No"
The media should perfectly match up!!!
In the Resolve set up the following:
1) Launch Resolve 9
2) in DaVinci Resolve 9 - click on the gear icon at the bottom left of the screen (this is the "project settings" button. by clicking this button the "Project Settings" is revealed)
3) click on the "Master Project Settings" Panel and scroll down to the "Conform Options" in the right hand area of the "project settings" dialog box
4) next to the words - Use Timecode: Put a bullet next to "Embedded in the source clip"
5) Put a check mark, by clicking next to "Assist using reel names from the:"
6) Put a bullet, by clicking next to "Source clip file pathname"
7) Next to "Pattern" type in the following "*/%R" (of course with out the quotes!!!)
8) click apply
If you are viewing the DaVinci Resolve "Media Pool" in details mode, you should now see the files update in the media pool and under the "Reel No" column you will now see all of you files with the suffix appended to the name.
this way the Resolves "Reel No" matches exactly the Avid's "Source File" and thus the timeline should now link to Resolve "Media Pool" using the DaVinci Resolve's "Reel No".
hopefully this is helpful
