PNG is about the only still image format that uses straight alpha instead of premultiplied by default. Makes all the difference, as Avid does not understand premultiplied.
(Why is that by the way, after so many years...)
It's a beautifull format for CGI, as it does highly efficient lossless compression.
Also for screenshots on websites and stuff, it very often makes a way better looking while smaller file than Jpeg.
(again, on CGI, YMMV on other content.)

Have you tried exporting/importing as PNG files? I have found that PNGs look better than any other file type. Perhaps the PNGs avoid the filter?
