Yes, just toying with that, and it seems backwards compatible just fine.
However, as Steve pointend out, they are really handy on sources.
Now i'm trying to get transcriptions converted to spanned markers onto a source.
But sadly, Avid is bitching that you can only import markers on a sequence, not a source....

I don't think there's any way to make markers visible in the image other
than by parking on them, but MC has been able to import and export them
for awhile -- at least since version 6.
