The gamma shift is a function of how the player decodes the image. Anything going through QT player is suspect and will look different on every machine, depending on source encoder, player version, player machine OS, etc. You will never reach a definitive, reliable solution. HTML5 players add another wrinkle. More reliable results will be to encode to MP4 using the Main Concept H264 in Squeeze. In an all-Apple workflow with ProRes, I've had good reslts from Compressor. But again, no guarantees at the viewer end. WebM played through Chrome is also pretty consistent.
